Report on the Oratories and Youth Centre Coordinators Meeting

Date: July 19-20, 2024

Location: Don Bosco Provincial House, Chennai

The animation program commenced with a serene and profound prayer session led by Fr. John Christy (INM). A total of 26 participants from 10 provinces were warmly welcomed by Fr. Kasi Sahayaraj, Vice Principal of the College of Science and Arts, Kilpauk.

Fr. Ashley Miranda (INB) introduced the latest document on Salesian Youth Centers and Oratories. He emphasized the need to transition our oratories from part-time to full-time or festive oratories, making them a crucial aspect of our mission.

Fr. Patrick Lepcha presented the nine objectives of the Don Bosco Youth Animation (DBYA). He highlighted the importance of the four dimensions in animating various groups and works within the Salesian Youth Ministry. He also provided an overview of the Salesian Youth Ministry's animation structure at the South Asia level and later reviewed the new document on Salesian Oratories and Youth Centres. Each province delivered informative presentations on their respective oratories and youth centres.

In the evening, participants visited St. Thomas Mount to pay homage to St. Thomas the Apostle. Fr. Shilanand celebrated the Holy Mass at St. Thomas’ Tomb. The day concluded with a sumptuous dinner hosted by the St. Bede’s community.

The second day began with the Holy Eucharist, celebrated by Rev. Dr. Emeritus Abp Chinappa (SDB). In his homily, he encouraged Salesians to welcome every youngster with joy and to dream like Don Bosco.

Participants engaged in discussions to address their concerns, clarify doubts, and share aspirations. They were divided into groups to discuss three key questions and made brief, synthesized presentations. Together, they formulated action plans to enhance the effectiveness of the oratories.

Fr. Gabriel, head of the Vocational Dimension of South Asia, posed the question, “What is the goal of the youth ministry?” The consensus was to nurture good Christians and honest citizens, with the ultimate aim of fostering vocations within the Church.

A collaborative discussion on the upcoming SYMFEST 2024 took place. The age group was finalized, and necessary decisions were made through consensus.

The community of Don Bosco Iallam Peravallur Youth Ministry and Migrants Desk Centre hosted lunch. Post-lunch, participants visited Don Bosco Vazhikaatil, the job placement and vocational guidance centre. The visit to the Broadway Oratory and Youth Centre was particularly enriching, with the oratory members organizing an engaging interactive program for the Salesian representatives.

The two-day program concluded with an evaluation session at St. Mary’s Co-Cathedral, George Town, followed by a grand supper. The event was successfully organized with the crucial efforts of Fr. Patrick Lepcha, SYM South Asia Delegate, and Fr. John Christy.
