An evening of Love and Learning at the Old Age Home

The youth of St. Joseph Vaz Mass Centre along with the boarders of Don Bosco Boys' Home, Sutgatti, visited the Mother Teresa Old Age Home in Hubli on September 14, 2025. The visit was a part of an outreach initiative to share joy, love, and time with the elderly residents.

In preparation for the visit, the youth collected funds to buy thoughtful gifts for the inmates. The group departed from the Don Bosco Academy, Sutgatti campus at 3:15 PM by bus. Upon arrival at the old age home, the group received a warm and heartfelt welcome from the simple and humble nuns who run the home, as well as the elderly residents. The program began with an opening prayer led by Fr. Lionel, the Rector.

The boarders performed two dances, and the youth presented an engaging action song to entertain the inmates. The Youth President, Austin, conducted a lively game that was greatly appreciated by the elderly audience. Fr. James, the youth animator shared his reflections on the visit, emphasizing the importance of compassion and the value of intergenerational connection. This was followed by more action songs led by Fr. Lionel, which further brightened the mood of the gathering. In a touching moment, two of the inmates came forward to sing songs—one based on the life of Mother Teresa and another expressing thanks to God. One inmate movingly shared her heartfelt gratitude in Hindi, leaving a lasting impact on everyone present.

The gifts were then distributed among the inmates, after which the youngsters spent time personally interacting with them. These moments of conversation and connection were deeply meaningful for both the visitors and the residents.

Several boarders and youth members expressed their appreciation to the Salesians for providing them with the opportunity to visit the old age home. For many, it was their first such experience. One boarder emotionally remarked, "I felt like crying, seeing so many grandmothers abandoned by their own children."

This visit was not only an act of charity but also a powerful lesson in empathy, respect, and human dignity. It left a deep impression on the youngsters, reminding them of the importance of caring for the elderly.
