Youth Embrace Digital Detox as 'Connect 2.5' Returns Nature to Center Stage

On July 20, 2025 at Don Bosco Sulcorna amidst Goa's monsoon-kissed landscape, over 100 young people from across the region gathered at Don Bosco Sulcorna for the much-anticipated annual retreat, Connect 2.5. Organized jointly by the Salesian Youth Movement and Don Bosco Youth Services, the event invited youth from Benaulim, Panjim, Shiroda, Tuem, and even as far as Oros in Maharashtra to disconnect from their digital screens and reconnect with nature and spirituality. Despite heavy morning rains, spirits remained high, and the downpour only amplified the day’s overarching theme of environmental harmony.

The day began with a Eucharistic celebration led by Rev. Fr. Jacinto, whose message was deeply rooted in his missionary experiences in South Africa. He called the youth to realign their lives by placing God above all else, stressing divine justice, mercy, and the need for constant spiritual return. The celebration was concelebrated by Provincial Fr. Clive, and other Salesians including Fr. Ronald, Fr. Sheldon, and Fr. Julius, marking a strong institutional presence and commitment to youth formation rooted in faith and nature.

With spirits uplifted, participants were then divided into ten color-coded groups for a series of dynamic team-building activities led by Fr. Ralin SDB. Designed to break social barriers and build bonds, the games sparked spontaneous laughter and enthusiastic cheers that brought strangers together in a matter of minutes. “The energy was infectious,” remarked one participant from Panjim. “Strangers became teammates, and the competitive spirit brought out everyone’s playful side.”

A major highlight of the day was the environmental plantation drive, where theory met action. Under the guidance of Fr. Sredny, participants learned the fundamentals of sapling cultivation with a focus on areca nut farming. Instructions covered everything from spacing and soil preparation to handling roots correctly. Undeterred by the rain, the youth rolled up their sleeves and engaged wholeheartedly, mixing compost and planting with diligence and care. Select groups even ventured to the mountainous terrain via tractor, led by Fr. Lawrence, Rector of Don Bosco Sulcorna. The moment of washing their mud-stained hands in the nearby river was a symbolic and humbling gesture, helping participants reflect on the unseen efforts of farmers who feed the world.

The adventurous spirit of the day carried into the afternoon Trek, led by Fr. Constantine SDB - fondly known as Fr. Tino. The journey through lush hills, misty fields, and flowing streams revealed the sheer beauty of Goa’s monsoon season. Along the way, participants were invited to complete simple observational tasks, helping them deepen their awareness and engagement with their surroundings. The trek ended at a serene water source where the structured agenda gave way to spontaneous joy, as youth played freely in nature’s embrace, rediscovering pure and simple happiness

In his closing address, Fr. Austin SDB, Director of Don Bosco Youth Services, expressed gratitude to all who made the event possible. He acknowledged the behind-the-scenes efforts that allowed the vision of Connect 2.5 to come to life. A final prayer of thanksgiving by Fr. Ronald brought the formal program to a close, recognizing both divine providence and human collaboration in shaping the day’s success.

More than just a day away from screens, Connect 2.5 offered young people a transformative experience of community, ecology, and spiritual renewal. As participants left with new friendships, shared memories, and a deepened respect for the natural world, the success of the event was evident not only in numbers but in the visible shift from digital consumers to active environmental stewards. The Salesian Youth Movement’s continued dedication to such initiatives reflects a keen awareness of modern challenges and the power of nature-based spiritual engagement in shaping resilient, grounded youth
