Viva Sao Joao - Where faith meets Fun
The Feast of São João brought the Don Bosco Animation Centre in Benaulim to life with festive cheer, soulful reflection, spirited music, and meaningful community connection on 22nd June 2025. This celebration, deeply rooted in Goan culture, was specially curated for the youth, blending age-old traditions with modern expressions of faith and fun.
Organized by the Don Bosco Youth Paschers Movement, “Viva Sao Joao” was both a celebration of heritage and a moment of reflection on how traditions are evolving in today’s fast-paced world.
The event began on an energetic note as participants were welcomed with lively ice-breaker activities and engaging action songs. They contributed to a warm, friendly environment where everyone felt included, energizing the young participants and setting a joyful tone for the event.
Later, there was an insightful session led by Fr. Edison, who spoke passionately about the spiritual and cultural significance of São João. He highlighted the rich traditions once closely associated with the festival like wearing floral wreaths (kopels), community bonding, and festive water games and lamented the gradual fading of these meaningful customs in modern times. His talk encouraged the youth to rediscover and preserve the cultural beauty of the feast.
A colorful and creative kopel making competition followed, where youth groups enthusiastically crafted floral crowns using fresh flowers, leaves, and traditional and natural materials. This activity not only revived a cherished custom but also encouraged creativity and teamwork.
The festivities rolled on with engaging games and group challenges that echoed with laughter across the Youth Centre. Whether through lively water play, classic Goan sports, or spirited competitions, the activities fostered bonding and brought the essence of São João to life in a joyful and interactive setting.
The day concluded with a lively prize distribution ceremony, celebrating the collective efforts and creativity of participating groups. Recognition was given for teamwork, enthusiasm, and group performance across various activities, reinforcing the spirit of unity and joy that defined the São João celebration.
The São João program at Don Bosco Animation Centre served as a powerful reminder of the richness of Goan Christian culture. It blended spiritual reflection, creative expression, and youthful energy all hallmarks of the Salesian mission to animate and empower young lives. By reviving fading traditions and fostering community through fun and faith-based activities, the event left an indelible mark on all who attended. It was yet another example of how faith, tradition, and youth engagement can come together in vibrant harmony.
