Connecting….with ourselves and the nature

Today’s world is increasingly dominated by technology and fast-paced living, thus the need for connection - both with ourselves and the natural environment - has been more essential. Recognising this need, the Don Bosco Panjim Province, under the Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) organised its annual event 'Connect 2.4' on 7th July, 2024. This event took place at Don Bosco Sulcorna and witnessed participation of over 170 participants from across the Konkan province (Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka). Participants travelled via four buses from Panjim, Fatorda, Benaulim, and Quepem.

The event ‘Connect 2.4’ is planned to encourage the youth to disconnect from the digital realm, and step out from their comfort zones and to reinforce themselves to engage deeply with themselves and the natural surroundings. The event began with an Eucharistic Celebration by Fr Lawrence, the rector of Don Bosco Sulcorna along with Fr Ronald and Fr Melwin. In his homily, Fr Lawrence deeply resonated on the theme of self-exploration and environmental connection. The youngsters were encouraged to reflect and explore their inner selves to understand their connection to the environment.

A key focus of the event was environmental stewardship, highlighted by a hands-on activity: the plantation of saplings. Participants trekked to the designated planting area, where a total of 200 saplings were planted. This hands-on activity not only fostered responsibility among the youth but also allowed them to engage directly with the earth. Following the planting, participants embarked on an adventurous trek through the beautiful terrain of Sulcorna, fostering camaraderie and creating lasting memories. During the trek, participants completed fun tasks, such as posing like Marvel superheroes, spelling "Sulcorna" backwards, shouting like Tarzan, or imitating wild animals. With a spirit of escapade, everyone returned home enriched by their experiences, creating memories and new friendships.

All in all, Connect 2.4 is more than just an event for the youngsters, it is a movement towards nurturing a deeper connection with nature and also with ourselves. In an era, technology and ever-demanding world overshadows our relationships with the natural environment, the event serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of exploring mother nature and fostering meaningful connections.
